Message from the President
My already-significant enthusiasm for NAWBO received a big shot in the arm when I attended the national NAWBO Women's Business Conference in Chicago in June. It was amazing to be in a room with 500 other women business owners from across the world, celebrating our achievements, learning things to enhance our businesses, and looking forward to more success. I hope I can appropriately communicate to those of you who are members how exhilarating it is to take advantage of everything NAWBO offers. In particular, it's invaluable to make connections with great women around the country and beyond. The 2010 conference takes place in Washington, D.C. in early June; I hope we have a San Diego delegation! To those of you who are not yet members, I cannot stress what a great asset NAWBO can be for you and your business. On the local level, we've added new free member events, with more to come, and we're working hard to make sure all the "best" San Diego women business owners are NAWBO members. Check it out, ladies! What's New?
NAWBO San Diego has a new website! Please check out the new look at nawbo-sd.org and let us know what you think. We love the clean, modern feel and hope you do, too. Kathleen Roarty and Mint Pillows have been in the news. The company's unique designs were featured in an article entitled Colors of Hawaii in the April 2009 issue of Garden Design magazine. We're pleased to welcome a new corporate partner, Anthem Blue Cross. Its financial support is invaluable as we seek to add new programs to better serve our members. The San Diego Small Business Association named Christine McDannell of Cleanology as Small Business Person of the Year and Judith Seid of Blue Summit Financial Group as the Women-Owned Business of the Year at its May award ceremonies. The San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce honored Christine with its Small Business Environmental Action Award and Judith was named the 2009 SRI Advisor of the Year by Boomer Market Advisor magazine. (SRI=Socially Responsible Investing) Members, please send What's New? submissions to us as

Most people consider estate planning only in terms of what happens to the assets they own (or who inherits) when they pass away. I think it’s more effective to think of your Trust as a business in itself that includes assets, income, payables and tax returns. The job of Trustee (or CEO of the Trust) has a great deal of liability and brings responsibility, sometimes involving years of work. Read More

By Adrienne Moch July 2009 It’s not uncommon that the first impression someone will get of your business is through something written: your website, a marketing piece or even an e-mail. Even if you have the best product or service in the world, if you present yourself poorly in writing, you may never have the chance to interact with many potential clients. Read More
